This volume offers a fresh approach to student-teacher relationships in middle childhood from the perspective of children in primary schools. It explores how children express their learning and emotional needs, as well as their聽 experience of good and less good student-teacher relationships. Their apprehension of care and its reciprocity, of the need for time and proximity in teaching and learning, of the vicariousness of the experience, and crucially, of the place of learning in student-teacher relationships, is authentically evoked through rich verbatim quotations. Children鈥檚 accounts answer questions which teachers, parents, professionals and聽 policy-makers ask. In the experience of children, what makes a person a teacher?聽 What is a 鈥済ood鈥 student-teacher聽 relationship?聽 Can children with poor relationship histories have good relationships with new teachers? How is learning or聽 鈥渄oing well鈥 integral to 鈥済etting on well鈥?

    Bonnici, Ugo Mifsud

Why are systems of Law so different? This work attempts to explain and justify the origins and continued existence of diversity in Law.

The forst part of the book introduces the phenomenon historically. It then succinctly describes the salient featuresof the principal legal families, as they exist today, answering the following questions in the process: What is of the essence of the Continental Systems? What is the strength of the Common Law Systems? What sustains the Sharia? What influence has Marxism left in the field of Law? What is the nature of Mixed Systems?

The author writes from a Mediterranean vantage point where many of these systems have come into practical contact making the comparison of systems inevitable, and of more academic interest.

The second part of the book traces the processes of harmonisation going on in certain areas of the law like environmental law and human rights. The book argues for the need of unification in other areas and the retention of diversity in others.

“Apart from the donkeys, mules and horses, which we continue to eat as before, we have now also eaten most of the dogs and cats as well as a good number of large rats”

Bosredon de Ransijat spent more than 30 years living among the Maltese, first as a Knight of the Order and later as President of the Government Commission during the French occupation. In his latter role he was blockaded with the French garrison within the city walls of Valetta. In his diary he describes just how determned they were to keep Malta in French hands and the hardships they endured during this two-year standoff with the Maltese country folk and the English Navy. Ransijat also gives his own in-depth analysis as to why the Maltese were glad to see the end of the Order’s rule and why they turned so quickly against their new French rulers.

This book is not only about the French occupation, it is also about Maltese society in the late 18th century and above all it is the story of an extraordinary Frenchman who was bold enough to defend his deepest personal convictions.

Ramsijat’s memoirs are undoubtedly among the most important historic documents concerning the French occupation of Malta, for one very simple reason: he was there.

    Ciappara, Frans

This visionary, passionate in his hatreds, who with his savage comments and rigid character rarely blended prudence with courage, and whose mind was so sorely swept by the winds of controversy, would be proved right in embracing the cause of the separation between Church and State and distinguishing canon from civil law. His ideas gained ascendancy after his death; they were destined to survive him and become visions in the sould of future generations. The credit they deserved was long overdue. The Erasmian seeds of his ideas which he expressed during the struggle were sown in the hearts of his compatriots. They fell neither ‘beside the path, so that all the birds came and ate them up’, nor on rocky land and among the briers but ‘where the soil was good, and these yielded a harvest.’ The idea of an omnipotent Church had been challenged, and, once challenged it could never recover the unconscious security of the past. The Church’s stand was without promise.
