New MoU with Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences, Bhutan, establishes partnership in medical education and research

On the side of the recently-held seventy-ninth World Health Assembly (WHA) held in Geneva, Switzerland, the University of Malta (UM) entered into partnership with the (KGUMSB) by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

This MoU establishes a five-year partnership in medical education and research, by aiming to strengthen academic and clinical capacity at both educational institutions through faculty and student exchange programmes, joint initiatives in anatomy and public health education, and the opening up of new avenues for research and funding opportunities.

The agreement stemmed from constructive discussions held between KGUMSB, the Ministry of Health of Bhutan and the UM delegation, which included Prof. Jean Calleja Agius and Prof. Lalit Garg, in addition to Prof. Neville Calleja, in Thimphu in the summer of 2025.

Representing the University of Malta and on behalf of the UM Rector, was Prof. Calleja, the Head of the Department of Public Health within the Faculty of Medicine & Surgery, whilst representing the Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences was the Chairman of the Governing Council, the Hon. Health Minister Lyonpo Tandin Wangchuk.
