The are one of the four regional most reliable rankings including the Arab Region, Asia, Emerging Europe and Latin America compiled by Quacquarelli Symonds, most renowned for its World University Rankings.
The Europe rankings assess the performance of 958 universities across 42 European countries and territories that are members of the Council of Europe.
This year, there were 291 new entrants in the rankings.
In the inaugural version of these rankings, published in 2024, UM managed to place in the 344th position.
In the second version, or the 2025 rankings, UM advanced to the 306th position, whereas in the latest QS Europe rankings, the University entered the top 300 with an overall score of 40.1, enabling UM to rank in the 291st place and surpass 69.7% of the ranked institutions.
This overall score reflects the University’s performance across key areas, namely: Research & Discovery (which carries 45% of the overall score), Learning Experience (accounts for a further 5%), Global Engagement (25%), Sustainability (5%) and Employability and Outcomes (20%).
This year’s results highlight several standout achievements across various indicators. The most remarkable progress was achieved in Inbound Exchange Students, where the score surged from 25.1 to an impressive 97.5, propelling the institution up 196 places from 238th to 42nd globally.
Employment Outcomes further consolidated its position as a flagship strength, improving from an already outstanding score of 99.3 to 99.9 and advancing into the regional top 10 at 7th place.
Significant gains were also recorded in the Faculty–Student Ratio, with the score rising from 50.5 to 68.7 and the ranking improving by 36 places, underscoring continued investment in teaching capacity and the student learning experience.
Further progress was also evident in International Student Diversity, where the score increased from 26.1 to 48.1, accompanied by a 14-place rise in the rankings, reflecting a more diverse and internationally engaged student community.
Aligned with the recently launched University of Malta Strategy 2026–2030, this achievement underscores UM’s commitment to addressing evolving societal needs through inclusive leadership and responsible stewardship of resources, ensuring sustainable and meaningful impact for students, staff, and the wider community.
