UM participates in first meeting of European University Association Thematic Peer Group

On behalf of the University of Malta, Dr Jacqueline Vanhear, Deputy Director of UM’s Quality Support Unit (QSU), took part in the inaugural meeting of the European University Association (EUA) Quality Assurance Thematic Peer Group.

Joining her were Dr Chaker Mhamdi, Quality Coordinator within the QSU and three UM student representatives: one from the , one from the University’s Quality Assurance Committee (QAC), and a student from the QAC student reviewers pool, part of UM’s initiative Students for Quality Assurance (S4QA).

The session, co-chaired by Maria Kelo, Director of Institutional Development at EUA, and Ana Lillebø, Principal Researcher at the University of Aveiro, was held online in early April 2026.

Over the coming months, the Group will collaboratively explore ways to make Quality Assurance more meaningful and engaging. At the heart of this effort is a co-design process involving academics, administrative staff and students to develop practices that go beyond mere compliance. By embedding quality into everyday academic discourse and increasing participation across the institution the Group aims to transform. self-reflection into an intentional strategic tool for continuous enhancement. Upcoming in-person meetings are scheduled at UM’s Valletta Campus in June 2026 and later in Florence.

“It is inspiring to work with a group so dedicated to transforming Quality Assurance into a purposeful tool that truly enhances the student journey,” Dr Vanhear commented on social media. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with committed colleagues from diverse European higher education institutions.

The University of Malta places student perspectives at the heart of its quality culture, ensuring that student representatives play a pivotal role in internal QA processes. This culture is equally sustained by the essential perspectives of academic and administrative staff, who work alongside students to actively shape the continuous enhancement of academic programmes.

By integrating these diverse viewpoints, the University ensures a holistic and collaborative approach to quality and efficacy.
