Workshop: Tackling the health workforce crisis: learning from the English NHS?

On 20 April, 2026, the Department of Health Systems Management and Leadership hosted an intensive workshop at IT ¸£ÀûÔÚÏßÃâ·Ñ (VC101), University of Malta, featuring Prof. Mark Exworthy from the University of Birmingham. Titled 'Tackling the health workforce crisis: learning from the English NHS?', the session provided a deep dive into one of the most pressing issues facing global healthcare systems today.

The workshop moved beyond basic statistics to examine the multi-faceted nature of the current workforce emergency. Key themes discussed included:

• Recruitment and Retention: Analysing the systemic barriers to maintaining a stable healthcare workforce.

• Motivation and Recognition: Exploring the impact of reward systems and professional validation on staff morale.

• Case-Study Analysis: Using specific examples from the English National Health Service (NHS) to identify practical hurdles and potential solutions that could be adapted to other contexts.

The session featured an active discussion facilitated by the Head of Department, Prof. Sandra C. Buttigieg. This interactive component allowed participants, including academics and health professionals, to bridge the gap between English policy case studies and the local challenges faced within the Maltese health system.
