Event: Malta Cafe Scientifique – Stratospheric: Malta’s first space balloon
Date: Wednesday 4 May
Time: 19:00 - 21:00
Venue: Studio B, Spazju Kreattiv
The atmosphere is the thin envelope of gases surrounding the Earth and helping us to breath, shielding the earth from the sun’s harmful rays, and keeping it a warm place.
With the rising pollution and global climate changes, it is important to continuously conduct research on the atmosphere, measuring the levels of different gases and investigating ways that will help us keep our atmosphere intact.
In an attempt to help scientists, conduct studies on the Maltese atmosphere, Malta had its first space adventure by launching a space balloon that rose 37 kilometres above the island into space!
STRATOS-1 is a space weather balloon that had measuring devices attached to it to collect never-seen-before space photos of the Maltese islands, as well as gathering data about the islands’ atmosphere.
Join Malta Café Scientifique on Wednesday 4 May 2022 at Valletta’s Spazju Kreattiv, Studio B with Prof. Kristian Zarb Adami at 7pm on a journey to space to discover what went into preparing for such a space adventure, the path the balloon took to space, and the images and data collected.
Malta Café Scientifique thanks the STEAM project, Spazju Kreattiv, for hosting this event, the University of Malta, and Malta Chamber of Scientists (of which the café forms part).
