The University of Malta (UM) is proud to announce the official launch of the UM PATLIB centre, Malta's first Patent Library Centre. The UM PATLIB centre, established within the University Knowledge Transfer Office and through continued collaboration with the Malta Commerce Department and the European Patent Office, is set up to directly support the local innovation ecosystem. It addresses the complexity of Intellectual Property (IP) rights, which can often be intimidating and overwhelming for many.
The centre provides a public service offering free initial guidance to the general public on their invention as well as access to patent knowledge to help entrepreneurs and SMEs understand if they should protect their IP, what type of IP rights may be best suited, and an explanation of the patent/design process itself. While centred on patents, the PATLIB experts also provide practical assistance and guidance on other crucial Intellectual Property Rights, including trademarks and designs, offering a holistic IP helpdesk for the entire community. Through offering this support, the UM PATLIB will help local parties use their IP as a strategic asset. The centre also plans to offer lecturing services and training focusing on areas of interest to the local PATLIB community.
"With the launch of Malta’s PATLIB Centre, we take an important step forward in supporting creativity, research and innovation at a national level" – Matthew Pisani, Director IP

The launch of the UM PATLIB marks a pivotal moment, firmly establishing Malta's place within Europe's leading IP knowledge network.
