Launch of 'The Future of Paceville' - MUP's latest publication

On Friday 17 April, Malta University Press (MUP) launched its latest publication, 'The Future of Paceville', co-edited by Dr Elise Billiard Pisani and Prof. Reuben Grima.

The event aptly took place at the Millennium Chapel, at the heart of Paceville, with keynote speeches by Prof. Ġorġ Mallia (Chair of the MUP Editorial Board), Fr Hilary Tagliaferro (Founder of the Millennium Chapel), Dr Claire Bonello, and the Editors.

A donation was kindly collected and donated to Fr Hilary Tagliaferro, in gratitude for hosting. Guests were treated to light refreshments in the Chapel's garden.

More about this publication:

This book is for those who believe that the destruction of urban common spaces is an attack against democracy as it leads to a dramatic reduction of rights. In particular, the articles trace the genesis of an urban oddity in the Maltese context which has become the model and testing ground for a new vision of its future. Interestingly, the collection of articles has an unusually long history; first drafted ten years ago, they have been enriched with constant and recent analysis. As predicted, the ‘Paceville syndrome’ has meanwhile spread across much of Malta and Gozo.

The picture is not completely grim, however, and the articles provide hope in collective action against the growing risks of excessive commodification and the hegemonic corporate control of planning decisions. They also point out the limits of collective action in a society entrapped in its parochial and clientelist loyalties.

'This book highlights some major issues present in Paceville and Malta’s planning and permitting systems, whilst providing potential pathways for Paceville’s future.'

- Dr Marie Louise Mangion, Head of Department of Policy, Politics and Governance, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Economics, Management & Accountancy

'This is why this book is so relevant today; it comprises excellent and diverse analyses of the vitiated and untransparent planning process which has become the norm.'

- Dr Claire Bonello, Advocate and champion for environmental protection
