RECLAIM Workshop and BioBlitz on Invasive Alien Flora

RECLAIM (REstoration and Conservation through the Limitation of Alien and Invasive Menace) project is a cross-border initiative under the Interreg VI-A Italia-Malta 2021-2027 programme. Prof. David Mifsud, of the Institute of Earth Systems, is the project leader for the University of Malta. Apart from the University of Malta, the other partners involved in this project include the University of Catania (Lead Partner), Environment and Resources Authority, Città Metropolitana di Catania and Libero Consorzio Comunale Ragusa.

The University of Malta organised two successful activities under the RECLAIM Project to raise awareness and encourage action against invasive alien species in Malta.

On 24 April, a workshop held at The Mulberries brought together researchers, students, environmental professionals, and the public to explore the impacts of invasive alien flora on local ecosystems. The event featured a series of expert talks covering the situation in Malta and Sicily, followed by a practical session on species identification. Contributors included representatives from the University of Malta, the University of Catania, and the Environment and Resources Authority, highlighting strong collaboration between Maltese and Sicilian partners.

This was followed by a BioBlitz on 9 May at Migra l-Ferħa, where researchers, students, and members of the public worked together to survey and document invasive alien plant species. The activity not only generated valuable ecological data but also increased awareness of the threats posed by invasive species to local biodiversity and habitats.

Together, these events contribute to the broader objectives of the RECLAIM Project, which aims to enhance the monitoring, management, and restoration of ecosystems affected by invasive alien species across Malta and Sicily through research, collaboration, and public engagement.
