Transforming daily movement: launching the first student journal and teacher’s handbook to extend physical education into the home

Two ground-breaking educational resources have been launched to transform the framework of Physical Education (PE) in Malta: "My Fitness Journal" and its accompanying "Teacher’s Handbook."

The launch event, held at the National Sport School (NSS) in Pembroke, was attended by key stakeholders, including the Head of College Network, members of the school leadership team, PE Education Officers, IPES (Institute for Physical Education & Sport) lecturers, PE teachers, and middle school students.

Authored by Sarah Bonnici, a B.Sc. in Sport and Physical Activity and Master in Teaching and Learning graduate, and Prof. Andrew Decelis, from the University of Malta’s Institute for Physical Education and Sport, the two books were designed by Architect Clayton Gatt.

These resources represent a significant step forward as the first dedicated PE handbooks for middle school students. Critically, the handbook is firmly rooted in the Maltese National Curriculum Framework and aligned with official Physical Education learning outcomes, ensuring pedagogical rigour alongside practical appeal.

This initiative is specifically designed to extend Physical Education beyond school facilities and promote increased levels of physical activity among students in their daily lives.

"My Fitness Journal" adopts a holistic approach to Physical Education, incorporating social, physical, cognitive, moral, and values-based dimensions that naturally emerge during lessons. By targeting these diverse aspects of development, the journal aims to foster a deeper understanding of PE and encourage higher levels of activity beyond school hours, with the active involvement of family members.

The launch featured a practical demonstration by middle school students from the National Sport School, who presented two tasks directly from the journal. Following the students' practical tasks, Prof. Decelis addressed the participants, highlighting how the journal teaches students essential life skills, including leadership, teamwork, and autonomy.

"The journal challenges students cognitively and encourages them to take ownership of their physical journey," Prof. Decelis explained. "Central to all of this is the inclusion of activities specifically aimed at making fitness a measurable, sustainable, and integrated part of a child's daily life. It is vital that students begin to take personal responsibility for their own health and fitness." He further noted that the Teacher’s Handbook provides educators with the practical tools necessary to make PE lessons more impactful and structured.

Sarah Bonnici shared her motivation for the project from her perspective as an educator. "As a PE teacher, my goal is not only to encourage students to remain active well beyond the school gates, but to use physical education as a vehicle to achieve holistic development amongst all students" Bonnici stated. "Nonetheless I want students to use these tasks as a catalyst to achieve a more active lifestyle and to carry these healthy and mindful habits into their futures."

To support the effective rollout of these resources, a Professional Development workshop for Physical Education teachers will be held on 30 September 2026, at IPES. This session will provide educators with the practical instructions and recommendations found in the Teacher’s Handbook to ensure a high standard of implementation.

Insaħħu l-Moviment ta’ Kuljum: L-Ewwel Ä urnal għall-Istudenti u Manwal tal-Għalliema biex Nestendu l-Edukazzjoni Fiżika fid-Dar

Ä ew imnedija żewÄ¡ riżorsi edukattivi innovattivi bl-għan li jittrasformaw il-qafas tal-Edukazzjoni Fiżika (PE) f’Malta: "My Fitness Journal" u "Teacher’s Handbook" li jakkumpanjah.

Għat-tnedija, li saret fl-Iskola Nazzjonali tal-Isport (NSS) f’Pembroke, attendew bosta persuni kkonÄ‹ernati, inkluż il-Kap tan-Netwerk tal-Kulleġġ, membri tat-tim tat-tmexxija tal-iskola, UffiÄ‹jali Edukattivi tal-PE, letturi tal-IPES fl-Universita ta’ Malta, għalliema tal-PE, u studenti tal-iskola.

B’mod kruÄ‹jali, il-manwal huwa msejjes sew fil-Qafas tal-Kurrikulu Nazzjonali Malti u huwa allinjat mal-learning outcomes uffiÄ‹jali tal-Edukazzjoni Fiżika.

Din l-inizjattiva hija ddisinjata speÄ‹ifikament biex testendi l-Edukazzjoni Fiżika lil hinn mill-faÄ‹ilitajiet tal-iskola u tippromwovi livelli ogħla ta’ attività fiżika fost l-istudenti fil-ħajja tagħhom ta’ kuljum. "My Fitness Journal" jadotta approÄ‹ olistiku lejn l-Edukazzjoni Fiżika, billi jinkorpora dimensjonijiet soÄ‹jali, fiżiÄ‹i, konjittivi, morali u bbażati fuq il-valuri li joħorÄ¡u b’mod naturali waqt il-lezzjonijiet. Billi jimmira lejn dawn l-aspetti diversi ta’ żvilupp, il-journal għandu l-għan li jrawwem fehim aktar profond tal-PE u jinkoraġġixxi livelli ogħla ta’ attività wara l-ħin tal-iskola, bl-involviment attiv tal-membri tal-familja.

It-tnedija inkludiet dimostrazzjoni prattika minn studenti tal-Iskola Nazzjonali tal-Isport, li ppreżentaw żewÄ¡ kompiti meħuda direttament mill-journal. Wara l-kompiti prattiÄ‹i tal-istudenti, il-Professur Andrew Decelis indirizza lill-parteÄ‹ipanti, fejn enfasizza kif il-journal jgħallem lill-istudenti ħiliet essenzjali għall-ħajja, inklużi t-tmexxija (leadership), il-ħidma f’tim, u l-awtonomija. "Il-journal jisfida lill-istudenti b’mod konjittiv u jinkoraġġihom biex jieħdu r-responsabbiltà tal-vjaġġ fiżiku tagħhom," spjega l-Professur Decelis. "ÄŠentrali għal dan kollu huwa l-inklużjoni ta’ attivitajiet immirati speÄ‹ifikament biex il-fitness isir parti mkejla, sostenibbli u integrata mill-ħajja ta’ kuljum tat-tfal. Huwa vitali li l-istudenti jibdew jieħdu responsabbiltà personali għas-saħħa u l-fitness tagħhom stess." Huwa nnota wkoll li t-Teacher’s Handbook jipprovdi lill-edukaturi l-għodod prattiÄ‹i meħtieÄ¡a biex il-lezzjonijiet tal-PE jkollhom aktar impatt u jkunu aktar strutturati.

Sarah Bonnici tkellmet dwar il-motivazzjoni tagħha għall-proÄ¡ett mill-perspettiva tagħha bħala edukatriÄ‹i. "Bħala għalliema tal-PE, il-mira tiegħi mhijiex biss li ninkoraġġixxi lill-istudenti jibqgħu attivi sew lil hinn mill-bieb tal-iskola, iżda li nużaw l-edukazzjoni fiżika bħala mezz biex nilħqu żvilupp olistiku fost l-istudenti kollha," stqarret Bonnici. "Madankollu, irrid li l-istudenti jużaw dawn il-kompiti bħala katalist biex jilħqu stil ta’ ħajja aktar attiv u jkomplu b’dawn il-użanzi sani u konxji (mindful) fil-futur tagħhom."

Biex jiÄ¡i appoġġjat it-tħaddim effettiv ta’ dawn ir-riżorsi, ser jittella' workshop ta’ Å»vilupp Professjonali għall-għalliema tal-Edukazzjoni Fiżika fit-30 ta’ Settembru 2026, fl-IPES. Din is-sessjoni ser tipprovdi lill-edukaturi l-istruzzjonijiet prattiÄ‹i u r-rakkomandazzjonijiet li jinsabu fit-Teacher’s Handbook biex jiÄ¡i żgurat standard għoli ta’ implimentazzjoni. L-awturi bħalissa qed jistiednu lill-għalliema tal-PE u lill-iskejjel interessati li jipparteÄ‹ipaw fil-programm ta’ implimentazzjoni pilot biex jikkuntattjaw lill-Istitut permezz ta' email għal aktar dettalji.
