Professor Mario Buhagiar’s special collection

Over the past three years the University Library has built a special collection dedicated to the work of Prof. Mario Buhagiar, consisting of books and papers donated from his personal research library.

This collection represents a life-time’s work and covers a wide range of subjects, such as Early Christian art, architecture and urban studies, local ecclesiastical history and parishes, together with works on the Maltese language, literature and folklore.

Included in the collection are a number of rare items such as issues of the early 20th century popular series Mogħdija taż-Żmien, Bellanti's 1913 publication Malta Kadima, J. Catania's Sulle orme di San Paolo a Malta, and a collection of 19th and early 20th century pamphlets concerning the Language Question.

Prof. Buhagiar has also donated his collection of reports entitled "A Protective Inventory of the Maltese Cultural Heritage", concerned with the detailed indexing of buildings considered worthy of preservation. The collection also includes Prof. Buhagiar's unpublished studies of the Maltese windmill, consisting of handwritten notes, photographs and sketches.

Maltese literature is represented by a number of rare first editions of 20th century classics including works by Dun Karm, Ä użè Bonnici and Ä użè Ellul Mercer.

Some of his latest donations include a rare almanac dating to 1783, Ä użepp Farrugia’s 1921 translation of Carlu Cortis’ pamphlet on the Sancuatuary of Our Lady in Mellieha, together with books and pamphlets about Medieval Malta and Malta during the time of the Kinghts.

The Library warmly thanks Prof. Buhagiar for his continuing generosity and welcomes requests to view items from this remarkable collection. An updated index to the collection is available on OAR.
