On 1 February 2024, the University of Malta’s Center for Traditional Chinese Medicine in collaboration with the Shangai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, organised a class whereby students pursuing a Masters’ Programme in Traditional Chinese Medicine learned about the craft of making moxa sticks for moxibustion.
Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy which consists of burning dried mugwort, or moxa, on particular points on the body.
The class was led by Dr Wang Yimeng, a seasoned practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
From rolling moxa on film to using round sticks and securing it with paper and glue, the class covered the hands-on element of the process, but also served as an exploration of the medical functions of moxibustion.
The students including a practising midwife and a nurse who work at Malta’s Mater Dei Hospital.
This session was an excellent opportunity to highlight the recognition of TCM’s medical benefits in Malta.
