The first active travel workshop in the Reġjun Punent was held on Wednesday 23 October 2024, marking the installation of the first five directional signs in the Region:
- Å»³Ü°ù°ù¾±±ð±ç,
- Mqabba,
- Ħal Safi,
- Ħal Kirkop, and
- Qrendi
Each provides scannable routes for walking and cycling. This project is led by the in collaboration with the Western Regional Council.
During the launch, a walking and co-design workshop was held, guided by , RSO and M.Phil student at the ICCSD and supported by ICCSD Staff. The participants were invited to engage in a walking interview with fellow participants, to reflect and learn more about active mobility and the walking and cycling environment. Two walking routes were set, both starting off from Xarolla Windmill, with one route heading to Ħal Safi centre and back and the other route heading towards Żurrieq centre and back. Each group had the opportunity to experience their walking environment and discuss together their experience and possible improvements prioritising walking and cycling. The walk also served to engage with the Nudging Active Travel Project Totem Poles. Following the walk, a short co-design and feedback session was held to collect some baseline data on the process and the experience of the group. This process will inform further studies being conducted by the ICCSD.
The Nudging Active Travel project, coordinated by and , seeks to raise awareness of the advantages of walking and cycling, educating the public on travel times, distances, and the often-overlooked benefits of choosing active travel over driving, particularly for shorter trips. This initiative builds on the Institute's work in active travel, focusing on identifying and mapping a walking and cycling network that began in the Eastern Region and has since expanded to the Northern Region and now the Western Region.
The totems, which display useful information about walking and cycling distances and travel times are already implemented in several locations. Thanks to the community’s recommendations, you can now also find by searching for "walking/cycling sign."
The routes can be easily accessed by scanning the QR codes with a phone, or whilst on the go.
