Dr Luca Di Gennaro, a from UM, visited the headquarters of the (ECLAC, or CEPAL in Spanish), one of the five United Nations regional commissions dedicated to promoting economic cooperation, in Santiago, the capital of Chile.
For two months, Dr Luca Di Gennaro worked at the ECLAC Statistics Division, which is led by Chief Statistician Rolando Ocampo, along with senior management members Xavier Mancero, Georgina Alcantar, and Daniel Taccari. During his time in Chile, he participated in meetings with directors of National Statistics Offices and seminars. He engaged with statistical representatives from National Statistics Offices and universities throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. The purpose of his tour was to promote a deeper understanding of the critical role that official statistics play in supporting governance, encouraging ethical practices in data management, and highlighting the importance of data agencies.
He attended the ECLAC-CEPAL seminar on "". Most of the attention was focused on the adequacy of GDP for decision-making in international cooperation.
His research examines how political regimes influence these official statistics, highlighting the region's diversity and complex geopolitical challenges. Who produces the official data in Latin America and the Caribbean? He explored the evolving perspectives of national statistical offices, data agencies, and citizen-generated data.
