From Classrooms to Communities: Science in the City Connects Malta

The Science in the City team, supported by the University of Malta and the Malta Chamber of Scientists, is preparing for the 2026 National Science and Art Festival. Taking place on 25 and 26 September 2026 in Valletta, the 15th edition is themed “Research, Resist, Reimagine.” The festival is a flagship event within the Science in the City programme, and forms part of a wider, year-round mission to connect science, the arts, and society.

Throughout the year, the team creates a dynamic programme of engaging events. Science in the City promotes curiosity and vocations in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) by inspiring young minds and encouraging public engagement with research and creativity. Its outreach spans schools and community spaces alike, with recent initiatives including participation in Festa STEM at Santa Monica School and engagement with young people during the Right 2 Smile Youth Group Open Day. These efforts reflect a strong commitment to making science accessible, inclusive, and relevant to diverse audiences.

A nationwide approach ensures activities extend beyond Malta to Gozo through Science in the Citadel, now a key highlight in the annual calendar. The team will also contribute to the Primary Science Fair and STEM Challenge, organised by the Directorate for STEM and VET, taking place from 4 to 8 May in Malta and Gozo. Together, these initiatives nurture young talent, promote scientific curiosity, and encourage future pathways in STEAM fields.

To stay connected with audiences throughout the year, Science in the City organises a pre-festival series starting at the end of August and continuing into September. This programme features a diverse range of activities, workshops, and interactive sessions open to all, led by researchers and artists, and designed to spark curiosity, dialogue, and hands-on engagement. Complementing these in-person events, a virtual festival takes place in December, offering an accessible online programme that extends the festival experience beyond physical boundaries and invites wider participation.

Preparation for the September festival is already underway, with a vibrant programme of performances, installations, and interactive experiences set to transform Valletta into a hub of discovery and creativity. To realise this vision, Science in the City is inviting NGOs, government entities, businesses, educational institutions, researchers, and creatives to take part by hosting stands, exhibitions, and hands-on activities. Participants will also benefit from training opportunities focused on effective public engagement.

At its core, Science in the City is driven by a simple but powerful goal: to bring people together through meaningful, hands-on experiences that inspire curiosity, encourage dialogue, and foster a lifelong connection with science and the arts.

If you want to join this growing family on the next festival adventure, fill in the application form before 11 May, !
