Exhibitions at the Library

Europe: 12 Maps, One Project

This travelling exhibition by the Embassy of Spain in Malta explores Europe’s history and identity through 12 carefully selected maps. It highlights how maps both reflect history and shape our understanding of it. Bringing together cartographic works from different periods, the exhibition illustrates how Europe has evolved over time—politically, geographically, and culturally.

The Visible Self

Curated by the Library floor staff, The Visible Self explores identity as a form of expression — a “second skin” that reflects cultural, social, and aesthetic values. Held in the Library foyer, the exhibition features a curated selection of books from the Main Library collections, including Fine Arts. Through art, illustration, photography, and literature, visitors are invited to discover different perspectives on identity, self-expression, and visual culture.

What's new in Melitensia

Melitensia's book of the month – May 2026

: Power, Culture, and the Stage written by Vicki Ann Cremona and published by Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti and Kite Group.

This two-volume publication, accompanied by illustrations, is considered a definitive study of the Malta Royal Opera House. Built in 1866, the theatre reflected the cultural, economic, social, political, and linguistic context of its time.

Cremona explores the theatre’s architecture, spaces, décor, stage machinery, reconstruction after the fire, management, audiences, and commercial activities. Through detailed descriptions and inventories, the work offers valuable insight into both the Malta Royal Opera House and contemporary European opera houses during one of their most influential periods.

The list of new Melitensia acquisitions is available online.
