The Mobile Dental Clinic – a large, fully equipped vehicle designed to provide on-the-go dental care – marked its 10th anniversary of offering free dental check-ups in villages and schools across Malta and Gozo.
Launched and managed by the University of Malta’s Faculty of Dental Surgery, the initiative has, over the past decade, provided care to more than 20,000 patients, with dentistry students delivering treatment under professional supervision.
Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, Prof. Nikolai Attard, noted that while the primary goal of the initiative is to offer free dental check-ups, the programme has also played a role in discussing balanced diets, and giving smoking cessation advice. An added value is helping members of the community become less anxious around dentistry professionals.
Celebrating this milestone in front of the Parliament Building in Valletta on Monday, 22 September 2025, several members from the Faculty were joined by the University Rector, Prof. Alfred J. Vella and by the University’s CEO and Senior Executive Officer, Mr Wilfred Kenely and Ms Claudette Buttigieg.
Students at the event spoke about this hands-on learning opportunity for them, which prepares them for real-world practice by allowing them to interact directly with patients, build confidence in their clinical skills, and understand the importance of community outreach in oral health care.
They also emphasised that the Mobile Dental Clinic is not only a valuable platform for training future dentists but also a service that strengthens the bond between the profession and the community, ensuring that oral health awareness and care remain accessible to all.
