New Researcher Joins Physics and Geosciences Departments on SENSEI Project

The Departments of Physics and Geosciences at the University of Malta welcome a new member to their joint research team working on the Horizon Europe project (Smart European Networks for Sensing the Environment and Internet Quality). Daniele Caruana, who recently completed a B.Sc. (Hons) in Physics, will be working with Prof. André Xuereb and Dr Matthew Agius on the local research efforts within SENSEI.

SENSEI is a collaboration between 15 academics and industry partners from six countries, combining expertise in photonics, metrology, geoscience, and optical networking.

The project aims to develop devices and technologies to use the existing fiber-optic communication networks as large-scale environmental sensors capable of detecting vibrations and structural changes across extensive distances.

At the University of Malta, the team’s research focuses on advancing this technology using both regional and local resources, including the Malta–Catania submarine fiber link and the network of seismometers across the Maltese Islands, which together provide a necessarily unique testbed for the system.

The team will develop physics-informed data analysis and signal-processing methods to enhance the interpretation of signals from the fiber network, addressing the various functionalities of the system.
