Prof. David Magri recipient of the Czarnik Emerging Investigator Award

The was held in Shanghai, China from 9 to 12 October 2025. The theme of MSMLG 2025 was Chemistry Lights Up Tomorrow.

In attendance was Prof. David Magri (Department of Chemistry) invited as the recipient of the Czarnik Emerging Investigator Award.

His presentation entitled From Lab-on-a-Molecules and Pourbaix Sensors to Cinchona Alkaloid Copolymer Logic Gates highlighted recent research on fluorescent natural product-based copolymers as sustainably sourced intelligent materials.

The cinchona alkaloids, derived from the tree bark of the cinchona tree, are of historic significance as the source of quinine, the first medicine used for the treatment of an infectious disease, which remains in use today. Quinine is also the flavouring agent in tonic water.

Anthony (Tony) Czarnik is an American chemist who was a pioneer in the field of fluorescent chemosensors. He was a co-founder of the biotechnology company Illumina located in San Diego, California.

The conference was hosted by the School of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering of East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST).

The research presented was supported by the FUSION R&I: Research Excellence Programme, grant agreement number REP-2023-023 administered by Xjenza Malta.
