Ritsumeikan University academic visits the Institute of Digital Games

Professor Dr Martin Roth from Ritsumeikan University Center for Game Studies recently visited the Institute of Digital Games at the University of Malta as part of the Erasmus+ ICM teaching mobility program. Roth provided a lecture about his recent research on video games in Japan, showing how exploring the production and distribution of video games may help us develop a more nuanced understanding of video game culture than is usually applied when discussing "Japanese videogames," or any other nationally framed videogame cultures. He also taught PhD students, commenting on their ongoing research projects, and was able to get to know the Institute of Digital Games and its various activities.

The visit had a mutual impact. Roth's research offered a new perspective on video games that, while developed in the context of Japan, raised diverse questions from the audience about their own framing of gaming cultures, including that of Malta, and thus led to a fruitful exchange. Roth was noticeably impressed by the activities of the Institute of Digital Games and expressed great interest in further collaborations, and gratitude for the welcoming, friendly, and inspiring atmosphere and interactions with the researchers at the University of Malta, and the opportunity to explore the astonishing architecture and nature in and around the university.
