Dr Carmen Mangion to head new Directorate for Outreach ¸£ÀûÔÚÏßÃâ·Ñ, C2C (Campus to Community, Community to Campus)

Dr Carmen Mangion has been appointed to lead the newly established Directorate for Outreach ¸£ÀûÔÚÏßÃâ·Ñ, C2C (Campus to Community, Community to Campus), a strategic initiative designed to strengthen the relationship between the University of Malta and the wider community.

Dr Mangion has been employed at the University for over 14 years, during which she has built extensive experience in academic administration, institutional development and student service provision. Throughout her career at the University, she has held several senior roles, including those of Assistant Registrar and Senior Executive, before serving as Deputy Registrar for the past six and a half years.

In these roles, she contributed significantly to the development of administrative systems, student support structures, and institutional initiatives aimed at enhancing the overall university experience.

Academically, Dr Mangion completed her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Youth Transitions in March 2025, a research area that explores how young people navigate the complex journey from education into adulthood, employment, and broader social participation. Her academic background also includes a Master of Arts in Theology and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Theology, reflecting her strong foundation in the humanities and social thought.

Dr Mangion participated in the 5th Forum of Sociology organised by the International Sociological Association, held in Rabat, Morocco. The forum brought together more than 5,000 sociologists from across the globe, creating a major platform for academic exchange and collaboration. During the conference, she presented her research titled “Negotiating Tradition and Modernity: The Experiences of Maltese Young People in Tertiary Education.” Her work examined how young people in Malta balance cultural traditions with modern educational and social expectations while navigating their tertiary education journey.

In her new role as Head of the Directorate for Outreach ¸£ÀûÔÚÏßÃâ·Ñ C2C, Dr Mangion will oversee the development of programmes that connect university knowledge, research, and resources with the needs of local communities.

The C2C (Campus to Community, Community to Campus) Directorate is designed to:

  • cultivate partnerships with schools, NGOs, local councils, voluntary organisations and government agencies; promoting Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) as an alternative pathway to higher education
  • coordinate community-based learning and research initiatives; and
  • support the co-creation of curricula that integrate community knowledge and lived experience
  • encourage collaboration between academic departments, community organisations, and public stakeholders to ensure that university expertise contributes directly to addressing societal challenges while also enriching teaching, research, and student development.

Through her academic work, administrative leadership, and community-focused approach, Dr Mangion brings a unique combination of research expertise, institutional knowledge, and social commitment to this new role, positioning the Directorate for Outreach ¸£ÀûÔÚÏßÃâ·Ñ C2C to become a key bridge between the University and the communities it serves.
