In Memoriam – Professor Greg Brooks of the University of Sheffield

, Emeritus Professor of Literacy and Education at the University of Sheffield, has passed away. A distinguished scholar of literacy and reading, he joined Sheffield in 2001, and after retiring, continued to contribute actively to educational research and literacy policy across Europe.

Greg's achievements in the literacy field are many. He also served on the . Greg had a longstanding and valued association with Malta. He worked closely with fellow Maltese educators and researchers, and helped to shape understanding of literacy education in the country.

He contributed on a regular basis to the MA in Literacy Education and supervised a number of postgraduate dissertations. For many years, he acted as Distinguished International Scholar for the UM's . Through his work, and through his wider involvement in European literacy networks, he became well known and highly respected among Malta’s educational community.

Greg will be remembered for his honesty, clarity of thinking and passion for literacy. He never declined a request for help. Prof. Charles Mifsud & Prof. Josephine Milton of the Faculty of Education, long-standing academic colleagues and friends of Greg Brooks said: “We will remember Greg not only for his deep scholarship and international advocacy for literacy, but also for his generosity, kindness and encouragement to friends, colleagues and students in Malta and beyond.”
