Students participating in the University of Malta’s DegreePlus badminton programme recently achieved excellent results in two tournaments organised by EVOLVE Badminton Academy.
This year’s Badminton Degree+ unit brought together a committed group of students who actively developed their skills throughout the programme and later represented the group in competitive events. In fact, during a singles tournament held in March, Zak Abela secured a gold medal after winning his Division 5 group, while Helenia Ellul Farrugia obtained a bronze medal in the same division. Degree+ students Zak Abela, Scott Zahra, Helenia Ellul Farrugia and Alisia Rasmussen also participated in a team tournament held in April. This team delivered a strong performance in the beginner division while gaining valuable tournament experience.
Scott Zahra, one of the student participants in this programme described the programme provided him with the opportunity to rediscover his passion for badminton after stepping away from the sport during the COVID-19 pandemic. “The Degree+ badminton sessions definitely sparked my interest in the sport again. The tournaments were extremely enjoyable the overall experience of competing made it incredibly rewarding and memorable.”
Degree+ tutor and coach Edmond Abela praised the enthusiasm shown by students throughout the academic year and noted the growing interest in badminton among University of Malta students. This could potentially lead to the opening of a student UM Badminton Club.
