The workshop will start with a brief introduction on how the PhD Academy at VSB – Technical University of Ostrava supports doctoral students and their supervisors. It will outline the types of activities and services offered, as well as key insights drawn from feedback provided by both doctoral students and supervisors.
The workshop will then focus on leadership in doctoral supervision. We will examine how doctoral students’ varying levels of professional development and institutional familiarity can shape effective communication approaches and leadership styles. The session will explore the evolving needs of doctoral candidates at different stages of their journey and consider how supervisors can best support, guide, and stimulate their development.
In addition, the workshop will highlight the role of communication from the perspective of doctoral students, emphasising its importance as a central element of a successful supervisory relationship.

PhDr. Petra Klapuchová, Ph.D. is an experienced lecturer, certified coach, and academic expert based at the PhD Academy of VSB – Technical University of Ostrava. She specialises in the development of doctoral supervisors, academic coaching, and soft skills training for PhD candidates and researchers. With a strong international academic background, including research stays at the University of Ottawa and Université Paris Descartes, Petra brings a global perspective to her work. She seamlessly integrates academic rigour with professional coaching methodologies (such as NLP and Gestalt) and has an extensive track record of delivering leadership and communication training for major international corporations. At the University of Malta, she will draw on her expertise in human potential development to help academics refine their leadership styles and communication strategies within doctoral supervision.
