Overview

The Annual Programme Review (APR) is a cornerstone of internal quality assurance at UM. It is a vital tool for programme coordinators to track progress and plan improvements to programmes of study. This session is designed for academics who want to move beyond "box-ticking" and use the APR to make evidence-based decisions that improve the student learning experience.

In this workshop, we will cover:

  • Why the APR matters: Moving beyond data collection to see how the APR fits into UM’s quality assurance framework and how it can help you reflect on your programme.
  • What makes a good APR: How to stop just ‘reporting’ what happened and start using evidence to explain why it happened. We will also look at how to use the APR findings to support constructive discussions at Board of Studies meetings.
  • Smart planning: Practical ways to gather feedback from students, examiners, and partners throughout the year to avoid a huge burden at the end.
  • Using the APR strategically: How to use the APR to identify risks early and prioritise meaningful improvements that support everyday learning, teaching and programme coordination.

The session includes a demonstration of the digital APR form and insights from academics, who will share their experiences on practical planning strategies, how stakeholder feedback was collected and used, and how APR analysis can support constructive Board of Studies discussions.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the purpose and value of the APR in UM’s quality assurance framework.
  • Identify the features of an effective APR, including evidence use and stakeholder input.
  • Apply practical strategies to plan and manage the APR for ongoing programme improvement.
