Albert Caruana is a Professor of Marketing at the University of Malta and Professore dell’Alma Mater Università di Bologna, Italy. He holds a PhD in Marketing from Henley Management College/Brunel University, UK, an MA in Marketing Management from Lancaster University, UK, and a BA (Hons.) in Business Management from the University of Malta.
He began his career in commercial banking - becoming an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (ACIB, London) - and later worked as a marketing manager in the wine and spirits sector before joining the University of Malta in 1992. Since completing his PhD, Prof. Caruana has undertaken post-doctoral research internationally, including as a Fulbright Fellow at San Diego State University, a Commonwealth Research Scholar at Manchester Business School, and through fellowships at Curtin University, Australia, and the University of Bologna, Italy.
Prof. Caruana has published extensively in leading journals, such as the Journal of Business Research, Industrial Marketing Management, International Marketing Review, Journal of Advertising, and European Journal of Marketing. He has served as Associate Editor for the Journal of Advertising Research and the Journal of Wine Research, and continues on the editorial board of the International Journal of Advertising.
His work has garnered over 15,800 citations, with his seminal paper on service loyalty cited over 4,100 times (Sep. 2025). In 2025, he ranked among the top 2% of researchers globally, and #1 in Malta for Business and Management research (Research.com).
Prof. Caruana is actively involved in doctoral, master’s, and staff development programs worldwide and has lectured across Europe, the US, Australia, and Asia. He has served as a visiting professor at KTH – Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, and Luleå University of Technology, Sweden, for over a decade, and is currently a visiting professor at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milan. He has also acted as an external examiner for doctoral degrees and served on the boards of multiple firms and institutions.
