Prof Cristiana Sebu has been with the University since September 2015 and she is currently Professor of Mathematics. She received a BSc (Hons) First Class and an MSc (Distinction) in Theoretical Physics from the University of Bucharest, Romania, in 2000 and 2002, respectively. In 2004, she obtained a PhD in Applied Mathematics from the University of Montpellier II, France, with a thesis entitled Problemes Inverses dans la Physique Classique et Quantique under the supervision of Professors Sorin Ciulli and Andre Neveu. After finishing her doctoral studies, Prof Sebu was employed by Oxford Brookes University (OBU), UK, as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. She continued her academic career at OBU where she became Lecturer in 2005, Senior Lecturer in 2006 and Reader in Mathematics in 2013.
For almost 25 years Prof Sebu has produced internationally recognised research in two main fields of Applied Mathematics: Inverse Problems and Mathematical Modelling.
In her main focus area, Inverse Problems, Prof Sebu’s published research brought her regular invitations to give talks at the most important international conferences in Europe, Russia, China, Turkey and the US. Prof Sebu made key contributions to the theoretical developments of Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) for medical applications, including the design of a ground-breaking portable EIT device for breast cancer screening, and the development of an image reconstruction algorithm for use in such screening. This work is carried out in collaboration with University of Mainz (Germany) and OBU, UK. Major funding bodies acknowledged the pioneering nature and the impact of this research (German Ministry of Education, HEIF 5 Business Enterprise Funding, MCST).
Research in her second area of expertise, Mathematical Modelling, has led to pioneering work in other disciplines (Physics, Biology, Engineering and Chemistry).
In recognition of her research at an international level, Prof Sebu was Associate Editor of the Inverse Problems in Science and Engineering journal until 2021. Since 2018 she has been the Editor-in-Chief of Xjenza Online (the Science Journal of Malta Chamber of Scientists), country coordinator for Malta of European Women in Mathematics and Co-Chair of the International Conference “Inverse Problems: Modelling and Simulation”.
