Prof. Inġ. Glenn Cassar earned his B.Eng. (Hons) in Engineering from the University of Malta in 2004. He began his career as a product design engineer at Methode Electronics Malta Ltd., while also lecturing part-time at the University of Malta in the field of materials failure.
In 2006, he joined the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering at the University of Malta as an Assistant Lecturer. He later pursued doctoral studies at The University of Sheffield (UK), earning his PhD in 2011 for his research on Improving the Tribological Characteristics of Titanium Alloys using Duplex Intensified Plasma Treatments. This work was recognised with the 2011 Brunton Medal for Metallurgical Research.
Upon his return, Prof. Inġ. Cassar progressed to Senior Lecturer, then Associate Professor, and later Professor. He led the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering between 2015 and 2022 and served as Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Engineering from 2018 to 2023. He also contributes to the Office for Professional Academic Development, supporting University of Malta academics in teaching and professional practice.
His current research interests include graphene-based nanomaterials, additive manufacturing (AM), and surface engineering (SE). He has led a number of externally funded research projects focusing on materials engineering, broadening the application of surface engineering and the use of hybrid techniques combining AM and SE. Prof. Inġ. Cassar was also actively involved in major infrastructure projects, notably the EU-funded Transdisciplinary Research and Knowledge Exchange Complex (TRAKE), aimed at establishing state-of-the-art engineering research facilities.
A Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining, Prof. Inġ. Cassar holds a warrant to practice engineering in Malta and is a Chartered Engineer (CEng) registered with the UK Engineering Council. He regularly serves as an expert advisor in engineering and materials science to government agencies and the local manufacturing sector.
