Kevin Schembri is Head of the Department of Pastoral Theology, Liturgy and Canon Law at the University of Malta, where he lectures in canon law and pastoral praxis and coordinates the M.A. in Matrimonial Canon Law and Jurisprudence. He also serves as Visiting Lecturer at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, teaching in the Faculty of Eastern Canon Law at the Pontifical Oriental Institute.
He studied philosophy and theology at the University of Malta, obtaining the bachelor (SThB) and licentiate in sacred theology (SThL) with specialisation in pastoral theology. He pursued studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University, where he earned the licentiate (JCL) and doctorate in canon law (JCD), and a postgraduate diploma in jurisprudence (DipJuris).
His book, 'Oikonomia, Divorce and Remarriage in the Eastern Orthodox Tradition' (2017), received the Emerging Scholar Book Prize of the European Society for Catholic Theology. He serves on the editorial board of 'Marriage, Families & Spirituality', a peer-reviewed journal based at KU Leuven, and co-led an international research project on theology and canon law, culminating in the report 'The Theology of Marriage after Vatican II: Theological and Canonical Perspectives' (2026).
Alongside his academic work, Schembri is a member of the Metropolitan Tribunal of Malta and of the Safeguarding Review Board of the Maltese Episcopal Conference. He also chairs the diocesan committee for the spiritual animation of the clergy, and is regularly invited to lead workshops in pastoral ministry and to preach retreats.
