Leanne Ellul (b. 1989) is a Maltese linguist, writer, and lecturer whose work bridges the fields of synchronic linguistics, stylistics, and contemporary Maltese literature. She lectures in Maltese language and literature at the University of Malta Junior College and teaches Creative Writing in Maltese at the University of Malta. Ellul earned a BA (Hons) in Maltese with First Class Honours, followed by a Postgraduate Certificate in Education and a Master of Arts in Maltese Linguistics with Distinction. Her MA dissertation investigated the morphosemantics of Maltese deverbal nouns.
Ellul’s scholarly work explores synchronic linguistics, with particular emphasis on morphology, semantics, and the stylistic analysis of literary texts. She has presented her research both in Malta and abroad. Her publications include contributions to the journal "Leħen il-Malti", namely “Riflessjonijiet dwar il-Mediterran: Ħarsa mill-Qrib lejn Żewġ Xogħlijiet Letterarji” (2013) and “Il-morfoloġija tal-mewt: elementi suwed fin-novella ‘Roża’” (2024). She is also the co-author of a number of studies, including “Revisiting the definite article in Maltese” with Dr Luke Galea, published in "Maltese Linguistics on the Danube" (De Gruyter, 2020), and “Heading towards definitions of silence: An analysis of synonymous nouns” with Clare Azzopardi, published in "The Next Century of Maltese Linguistics" (De Gruyter Brill, 2025). Other studies of Ellul have appeared in "l-aċċent".
She formed part of the organising teams for Konferenza Juann Mamo (2013), Il-Biża’ fil-Letteratura Maltija (2019), and Seen and Heard: Young People’s Voices and Freedom of Expression International (2026). Over the years, she has delivered numerous guest lectures, including talks for various sixth forms, sessions held as part of the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme for secondary-school teachers, and public lectures for NGOs such as the Akkademja tal-Malti. She has also been invited to speak on Jum Dun Karm (2023) as well as at The Child and the Book Conference (2022).
She serves as Artistic Director of the Malta Mediterranean Literature Festival. Her writing includes Maltese-language textbooks as well as poetry, novels, children’s books, short stories, and plays.
