Change of Course Form

  • Persons who have just applied for a course with the University of Malta (UM) and are about to start their 1st year of studies, but for some reason would like to amend/change their original choice of course preference/s before the commencement of their course, must submit an official Change of Course request.

Submission of Change of Course requests are only allowed during the period when course applications are open for admissions, mainly between January and October. During this period, admissions applications are received for two intakes - the February intake and the October intake. You may refer to our official February List of Courses and October List of Courses to check which courses are accepting applications during these intakes.

Before submitting a Change of Course request, applicants need to be aware that specific circumstances may not allow the processing of a Change of Course request. Hence, kindly read carefully the conditions and criteria set hereunder to make sure that the request that you are about to submit would be eligible for processing.

    1. Change of Course requests should only be submitted by applicants who are about to start their university studies as 1st year students. In the case that you are already pursuing your studies at UM, but for some reason you wish to withdraw from your course and “change” to a new one, then you need to apply as a new applicant through our course application page during the admissions period (and not submit a Change of Course request). Specific deadlines apply when applying for a course.
    2. Do not submit a Change of Course request if you originally applied for any of the following: Visiting/Individual Study Units, Micro credentials, and/or Liberal Arts Courses. In case you wish to withdraw or change from any of the above, you need to liaise with the specific University department who is offering such short courses.
    3. Changing your Mode of Attendance (MOA): If you are an applicant who are about to start your university course as a 1st year student, and during this admissions period you would like to change the MOA of any of your course preferences (from Full Time to Part Time or vice versa), this change is considered to be a Change of Course, and so therefore you would need to submit an official Change of Course request. If however, you wish to change your MOA after the admissions period, or, during your studies at the university, you need to contact your respective Faculty/Institute/Centre/School instead, so that they amend your records internally while you remain enrolled in your course.
    4. For courses which are CLOSED (not accepting anymore admission applications). During the admissions period, some courses accept applications for admissions up until a given date and would not accept any further applications after this given date. In such cases, Change of Course requests can only be processed towards courses/areas of study that are open and accepting applications for admission at the time of your request. This means that any Change of Course request submitted towards these CLOSED courses would be invalid and may not be processed (except for limited courses which only allow the option to invert the order of your original preferences). Similarly, if in your Change of Course request you decide to remove any of your course preferences for which applications has since CLOSED, you will be forfeiting your eligibility to be considered for these courses and you would not be able to re-include those same courses again in any subsequent Change of Course requests. Therefore, please make sure you have decided properly before changing/withdrawing from such courses. Courses which have CLOSED for admissions are indicated on the official February List of Courses and October List of Courses.
    5. For courses without a limited number of students: If you are accepted for your 1st preference course and an acceptance letter has been issued, your 2nd preference course will be automatically withdrawn. If however, after being accepted for your 1st preference, you still wish to be considered for your 2nd preference, you may only submit a Change of Course request if your 2nd preference is still accepting applications for admission at the time of your request. If you were withdrawn from your 2nd preference course, and such course has since CLOSED for admissions, any Change of Course request submitted towards these courses will not be processed. Courses which have CLOSED for admissions are indicated on the official February List of Courses and October List of Courses.
    6. For courses with a limited number of students: Change of Course requests to courses/areas in which the number of students that can be accepted is limited, can only be considered if submitted by 14:00hrs on 22 July 2026. After this date, applicants who have applied for such limited number courses are only allowed to invert the order of their existing preferences up until 14:00hrs on 31 August 2026, after which an official ranking process will occur. Please note that if after the conclusion of this ranking process you become officially accepted for your 1st preference, your 2nd preference (if applicable) will be automatically withdrawn, and you will not be eligible for a Change of Course towards your 2nd preference, after this final stage. Courses which accept a limited number of applications are indicated on the official February List of Courses and October List of Courses.
    7. For the Doctor of Medicine and Surgery course: Given that this course does not accept late applications, Change of Course requests towards the Doctor of Medicine and Surgery is only allowed if you have already applied for and included this course as one of your preferences before 14:00hrs of 22 July 2026. However, it will still be possible to invert the order of your preferences after this date until an outcome letter is issued. Furthermore, please note that if after this date, you decide to withdraw from this course either by choice or by being accepted into another course, you will lose your eligibility to be re-considered for the Doctor of Medicine and Surgery Course, and any potential Change of Course request submitted towards this course will not be processed.
    8. For the Bachelor of Arts course offered by the Faculty of Arts: All Bachelor of Arts 1st year students from the Faculty of Arts are required to follow two study areas during their 1st year of the course. Hence, if you want to change to this course, you must always include two areas of study in your NEW chosen preference, for example, Bachelor of Arts in English and Psychology. If you submit a Change of Course request in only one area of study instead of two (For example, Bachelor of Arts in English), your request would be invalid and will not be processed. For your reference, the combinations of areas of studies that may or may not be chosen together before the commencement of your 1st year, can be viewed from here.
    9. Submitting a Change of Course request is not deemed to be a guarantee that you will be accepted in the new course you wish to change to. Hence, before submitting your Change of Course request, you should familiarize yourself with the University Website, the Admissions Regulations, the Course Regulations (or Bye-Laws) and the University General Regulations in order to ensure that you satisfy all the entry requirements of the course you wish to change to, and to be aware of any provisions and responsibilities you would be required to adhere to in relation to your studies at the University of Malta.
    10. Change of Course requests are submitted against an administrative payment fee. Once you effect your payment, a receipt shall be sent to your email address indicating that your payment has been submitted successfully. If however, you don't receive a receipt of payment, then it means that your payment was not processed and that your Change of Course request failed to be submitted, in which case you will instead receive an email indicating that payment is due. Submissions of Change of Course requests are deemed to be valid only when payment is successfully submitted by the applicant. Therefore, in the event that your payment remains due, you should try to re-submit your request again or contact your bank to check if you have any issues with your payment card. Unpaid requests will not be processed by the university
    11. Any submitted fees (if applicable) are non-refundable, so please make sure that you have read and understood all the conditions and criteria set in this page and the details you will include in this Change of Course request are applicable and correct. If you submit an incorrect Change of Course request that cannot be processed, any submitted Change of Course fees will not be refunded.
    12. Once a valid Change of Course submission is reviewed and processed by the Admissions and Records Office, a summary of the Change of Course details will be sent to you (if applicable) on the email address you had provided when the original course application was submitted. If required, the application for the previous course will be then withdrawn, and a new evaluation process will be conducted on the new preferred course. If applicable, a new official admissions letter indicating the outcome of your new application will be also sent once this new evaluation process is complete.
