Abstract: The psychological and physiological effects of computer related stress were examined among computer users. The study aimed to determine whether stress suffered among computer users is due to excessive use of the computer unit, lack of computer knowledge or confidence, a badly designed workstation, extraneous work factors or a combination of two or more of such conditions. Thirty three participants within the LT. Department of an established financial services organisation responded to a questionnaire, based on the Display Screen Equipment 2000 regulations, giving information on the workstation in use, the level software and computer knowledge, technology confidence levels, control, social support and skill utilisation, hours of computer use and pain symptoms. A comparison between stressed and non-stressed users was made to determine the source of stress. The results showed that prolonged use of computer work contributes to both physical and mental stress, however the main cause of stress was found to be due to work overload and pressure. This study also showed that men tend to be more prone to computer stress and work pressure, with the main cause being the longer hours spent on the unit than women.
