Abstract: The aim of this project was to give an insight on the science of cross-breeding cattle to improve and adapt imported dairy cattle breeds to the local environment. After giving an introduction on the science of crossbreeding, the author gave a brief introduction on the only 50% Maltese/50% Holstein cow recorded in the Maltese Islands. Data on its milking cycle was compiled and compared with that of a 100% pure Holstein/Fresian cow of similar age and present on the same farm. Following an analysis on the results from the data provided, the outcome of the report was discussed and recommendations as regards to the setting up of a breeding program for further research and hypothesis for the outcome of the further research were discussed.
