Abstract: Purpose: The aim of this study is to analyse the impact that COVID-19 has had on the Spanish language, in particular reference to the Spanish written language used. More specifically, this study aims to identify new words that were conceived due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as evaluate entomological changes in existing words. Methodology: Secondary desk research was utilized, by comparing different articles from different reputable publications based in Spain. The subject types for each article and cut-off date were chosen to be similar in each of the 3 publications chosen for cross-referencing and analysis purposes. Findings: Findings from this study show, that throughout the publications chosen, through the different periods chosen, there was indeed a significant change and addition to new words caused by the global pandemic, with all articles displaying tendencies to utilize such novel language. Research Limitation: The study is impacted by the novelty of the core research question and lack of literature available on the subject matter. It is also impacted by a time and resources limitation to go deeper into the research question. Future research could make use of this study, as well as supplementing it with both quantitative and qualitative research for a more accurate picture of the implications COVID-19 has had on the Spanish Language. Practical Implications: This study can be used as an initial insight into how pandemics can have an effect on written language, and can be a baseline for future studies on the impact on other languages to provide insights into possible trends of language change due to global pandemics.
