Abstract: Catechesis is the process of making new disciples, as instructed by Jesus before his Ascension (Mt 28: 19-20). It is the transmission of faith to the next generation of Christians. Traditionally, this mission has been entrusted to lay catechists who dedicate themselves to teaching children the basics of the faith. Over the years, the Church has become more aware of the ecclesial nature of catechesis. Recently, from the Second Vatican Council onwards, Church teaching has been pointing out to the parents as the first catechists of their children, with the rest of members of the Church having the role of assisting them. The aim of this study was to examine the role of parents in the catechesis of their children. First, the development of the child was considered. Then the role of the parents in this development was considered in the second chapter. Finally, Scripture and Magisterium writings were considered in the light of the scientific knowledge of child development. With science emphasising the importance of relationships in child development, especially between children and their parents, it was concluded that the parents do in fact have the most important role in the catechesis of their children.
