Abstract: Polyutus (Poliuto) is a lyrical tragedy in three acts by Donizetti with a libretto by Salvatore Cammarano. It was performed for the first time on 30 November 1848.
The event takes place in Mytilene, the capital city of Armenia, in the year 267. The plot: Pauline, the daughter of the Roman governor, married Polyutus, a Roman officer and nobleman, but only because she believed that her former love, General Severus had been killed in battle. Severo's return puts her in a deadly conflict between her feelings and her duty.
