Shelley 'translated' by the Italian decadent movement : the case of Adolfo De Bosis

Abstract

Giovanni Pascoli, while trying to collect some English and American poems to include in his anthology Sul Limitare, on the 17th of August 1898, wrote to his friend Valgimigli saying: ' .. . Se intanto hai trovato qualche cosa di bello o in versi o in prosa comunicamelo. Di la stessa cosa al gentil Gabriele. Al quale di pure, che mi prepari allo stesso modo qualche poesia breve dello Shelley. Quella l'ho tradotta, e ritmicamente e venuta bene. Solo qua e la strozzata. Ma tradurre veramente non si puo. Il meglio e cercare di rendere, anche piu che il senso, la suggestione del testo'.
