Using streets efficiently : identifying urban streets in Malta that can be improved with green infrastructure to facilitate pedestrian mobility

Abstract

The following research examines the viability of using Green Infrastructure (GI) to improve the pedestrian experience in Malta. Starting with a study of foundational urban planning and GI concepts, which tied urban planning and GI together, research then identified the Slow Streets Malta project as an effective framework for identifying and improving streets in Malta for pedestrian access. Using on-site visitation of 4 Slow Streets locations (Mellieha, Naxxar, Xghajra, and Zejtun), appropriate GI typologies were identified and investigated for viability at Slow Streets locations. Using existing research, a framework was developed to find and improve new streets outside of the Slow Streets network. The research ends with a brief stakeholder engagement study of three members working in urban planning agencies in Malta. This research was able to provide a high-level examination of the potential for GI in Malta and only gives basic recommendations. Further research could examine in much greater detail how to implement GI at the study locations. Ultimately, research showed that GI combined with effective urban planning has a strong potential to improve pedestrian access in Malta and assist in other environmental challenges. The project acts as a foundation for the expansion of GI implementation in Maltese urban areas, relative to pedestrians.
