| Abstract: | Although modern Greece has received a great deal of attention from anthropologists and to a lesser extent, historians, the study of the evolution of its legal systems and its relationship to society has sadly not received much interest. This volume, in a somewhat specialist publication, will contribute towards a greater understanding and awareness of the complexity of this process in what was in effect the first post-colonial state in Europe and a model for subsequent nationalisms. Yet this volume is a mixed bag of articles by anthropologists and historians and, as often happens in such endeavours, raises more questions than it perhaps answers, although Marie-Elisabeth Handman valiantly tries to do so in a postscript. |
