| Abstract: | This new publication entitled Rabat Sacrum, co-authored by Thomas Freller and the late Mgr John Azzopardi, aims at providing a fresh perspective of the sacrality of Rabat from a European viewpoint, from the early modern history of Malta until the present day. Early modern travel literature was largely produced by the elite classes. These travelers had several interests. Some delighted in contemplation of the arts; some sought to discover the decay of ruins and Maltese antiquity; others remarked on the strange customs_ and fashions as they, passed through Maltese towns and villages. But their curiosity drove them to walk that extra mile and discover the fertile town of Rabat which fostered our national identity. [excerpt] |
