Abstract: It is well known that the presence or lack of metal ions have a drastic influence upon the crystallisation of a compound, whether the ion will be part of the crystal structure or not. Throughout the past decade our group systematically explored the influence of ions in cocrystal and polymorph screening experiments for pharmaceutically active compounds, as well as various other inorganic and organic compounds. Results from our own investigations will be put into context with examples from the rich history of hundreds of years of research into the crystallisation of compounds.
