Abstract: Introduction: Hypertension is of serious public health concern, associated with considerable morbidity and mortality as well as other non-communicable diseases. This is one of the most frequently screened conditions among the general public in Malta. Understanding the burden of hypertension at population level could help target public health strategies according to needs. The aim of this study was to measure the prevalence of hypertension while comparing to previous studies.
Methods: A representative cross-sectional health examination study was conducted among adults in Malta. Medical data was gathered by validated questionnaires while blood pressure was measured. Prevalence rates of known and new hypertension were calculated. The overall hypertension prevalence was age stratified and compared to three epidemiological studies previously conducted in Malta (WHO in 1981, MONICA in 1984, European Health Examination in 2010).
