Abstract: Not to be confused with the mountain in the Bergamese Alps of the same name, Monte Cavallo is a hamlet situated on the southwestern edge of the Italian region of the Marche, the edge which borders on the Lazio region. The website run by its present local council ( comunedimontecavallo.org) reveals that the hamlet's population currently amounts to 122 souls. At the time of the events we are about to narrate, it is unlikely that it would have numbered many more. Monte Cavallo is currently in the process of promoting itself as the ideal holiday destination for the discerning tourist, offering an excellent local cuisine, mountain walks and relaxation in unspoilt surroundings. In the century when our story unfolds, the eighteenth century, it would have been seen by outsiders as remote and primitive.
