Abstract: In principle extreme weather events are infrequent, but whenever they occur a severe impact is induced that exerts a heavy toll on systems often resulting in catastrophic failures. Examples of such extreme events are heatwaves, floods, droughts, and heavy rainfall. Considering the disastrous effects that extreme weather events can cause, there is a growing interest throughout the research community, especially in the field of weather research, to understand the behaviour and the impact of such events on society and economic activities as well as on environment degradation.
