Abstract: The OECD Ocean Economy Outlook for 2050 underscores the role of science and innovation in supporting the long-term productivity of marine and maritime activities that collectively constitute the blue economy. As scientific and technological advancements seek to address the complex dynamics of marine environments, they must also remain aligned with both societal and ecological priorities. Achieving this alignment calls for forward-looking approaches that actively engage with long-term sustainability transitions. This contribution examines how embedding foresight and futures thinking within blue economy research can enhance the capacity to navigate complexity and support adaptive, sustainable ocean futures. Drawing on recent foresight work, the talk will illustrate how anticipatory methods can inform strategic research and innovation agendas. It will reflect on lessons learned from applying foresight in marine science contexts and explore how collaborative processes can help align innovation trajectories with emerging sustainability priorities.
