Abstract: Health social work occurs in different practice contexts including acute care, mental health, elderly, disability, oncology, substance abuse and any other context involving illness and health (Petrakis & Lethborg, 2023). Furthermore, health social work takes place in both hospital and community-based health care settings (Ross & de Saxe Zerden, 2020). This is also the case on the Maltese Islands. Social work is provided in the general hospitals in Malta (Mater Dei Hospital and Gozo General Hospital), the rehabilitation hospital (Karin Grech Hospital), Mount Carmel Hospital (mental health), oncology care (Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre, SAMOC), elderly care (St Vincent de Paul Hospital) and community-based health centres. In the health sector, social work is also offered by Hospice Malta, which is a leading Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), and the Karl Vella Foundation amongst others.
