| Abstract: | Although suffering and death have always been part and parcel of the human condition, over the past few decades there has been increasing pressure on governments to legalize euthanasia. Here, I will try and show how this renewed interest in euthanasia might be due to biopolitics, or rather, thanatopolitics. I will argue that this is producing a hegemony, or a collective oppressive force over those who are in the last stage of their life. As a response to this struggle, I will propose the way of non-violence as a means of befriending the oppressive force of death and of rediscovering its centrality to humankind. |
