Abstract: An article describing the unexpected discover of more than one species of crab in the Maltese Islands. For years it was thought that the Marbled Shore Crab (Pachygrapsus transversus) was the only species of grab present on Maltese beaches, an extensive survey of the local crab population in 1984 confirmed this. However, recently two new species of crab have been discovered dwelling on Maltese and Gozitan beaches: the Mottled Shore Crab (Pachygrapsus transversus) and the Pachygrapsus maurus. The former only occurring on beaches in Gozo and Comino.
