| Abstract: | The Military Orders on Land and by Sea' -the theme of this conference and its proceedings -has a special resonance for mid-sixteenth-century Maltese history, and Maltese history in general. This is because it is at this time (1530-65) that an introverted community which had, under the unpardoning yoke of piracy, largely turned its back to the sea in the later Middle Ages, was now, under the impetus of a new sea-faring master (the HospitalIers), starting to redefine its focus. |
