| Abstract: | 1940 drew to a close. Many squadrons of the Luftwaffe were transfered from other bases to Sicily to reinforce the Regia Aeronautica. This Corpo Aereo Tedesco under the command of General Geissler included officers who had taken part in aerial attacks over France, England and Norway. The blitz was soon to begin. On 13 January 1941, the aircraft-carrier Illustrious limped into the Grand Harbour, with smoke sti ll coming out from under the flight-deck. She was berthed along Parlatorio Wharf and work on temporary repairs started soon after. Before reaching Malta. she had been subjected to severe dive-bombing attacks, while escorting a convoy to Malta. Many went to vantage points to catch a glimpse of the battlescarred ship. |
